+ Perry Hill, St George with Christ Church and St Paul: what’s with the name?
Yes, it’s a bit of a mouthful.
At one stage, there were three different churches. In the 1980s, Christ Church in Forest Hill merged with St Paul’s, the other side of Forest Hill station: hence Christ Church and St Paul.
Then in 2004, they joined together with St George’s, in the Perry Hill end of Forest Hill, thus creating the name we have now.
The congregations moved together into a brand new site, as the old St George’s building had had to be taken down due to subsidence. The old Christ Church site is being redeveloped, mostly as flats, but part of the site, the former chancel, will be maintained as a worship centre.
We are days away from a new and exciting chapter in the history of St George's. We are overjoyed to be uniting with our friends and neighbours St Michael's, Lower Sydenham creating a joint benefice - a mega parish called St George and St Michael.
